" The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new." - Rajneesh
Postpartum is an extremely important period in a new mothers life. The care received during that time should be much more in depth, frequent and over a longer period of time - and most importantly given with love and respect.
After you've birthed your baby in a hospital setting, standard obstetrical care includes ONE visit in the doctors office at 6 weeks postpartum and only 40% of new mothers actually schedule and keep that appointment.
In my midwifery practice as a homebirth client, I see you on Day 1 and Day 3 postpartum, and at Week 1, Week 2, Week 4, and Week 6. You also have the opportunity should you wish to continue well-visit care for you and your baby throughout the first year, I also see you at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. That's 6-10 postpartum visits compared to the one most new mothers usually get with standard obstetrical care.
Postpartum & Newborn Care Services
It's about time that our western society begins having reverence for the care a postpartum mother & her family truly needs. Many call this time the "fourth trimester" and cultures all around the world have practices that honor and support the new mother and baby for months and months after birth.
Postpartum Care holds a special place in my midwife heart. I experienced Postpartum Depression & Anxiety after the births of each of my boys. Having a "healthy" mother and baby are obviously of the utmost importance. However, her emotional, mental, and spiritual states of being are unfortunately are often tossed aside, or never even acknowledged in the first place.
I wish to serve women in a way in which her WHOLE being is honored, acknowledged and cared for as her mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies all equally important and deserve to be seen as such. Each of my homebirth midwifery clients will receive the following:
Postpartum Care for Mom - includes all of the medical care needed during the immediate, and first several weeks postpartum, like monitoring vitals, bleeding, and physical healing. Help with breastfeeding, education on what "normal" postpartum looks like, and screenings for mood disorders, family planning, and labs or medications that may be needed. I'll check in with you emotional and spiritual well-being too, because what you experience in birth may leave you with lots of really big feelings, and that's ok!
Postpartum Care for Baby - These sweet little babes are tiny humans who need lots of love and support too. Your newborn will also receive all the standard medical care needed following birth, and the first several weeks after birth, like the newborn exam, standard testing (Newborn & Congenital Heart Defect Screening), monitoring vitals and weight, and any labs or medications that you desire.
Postpartum Support is for the whole family. We'll talk about what it may be like giving your littles another sibling to love on, create a postpartum care plan to have in place once the new baby arrives, finding your tribe of helpers, etc. At those extra visits, we'll include talking about healthy sleep habits, starting solids, and other first year milestones.
Are you planning a hospital birth but still want the postpartum support of the Midwifery Model of Care? You can have both!!
