"Speak tenderly to them. Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of our greeting. Always have a cheerful smile. Don't only give your care, but give your heart as well." - Mother Teresa
I've known since childhood that my soul's purpose is to help usher lives into this world. I was only thirteen when I first witnessed the "Miracle of Life", my aunt was having her third baby. When that precious baby girl took her very first breath, something inside of me clicked. I knew in that exact moment, I had a very special purpose in this life. I was meant to receive babies, caring for them and their Mothers.
I am Mother to two, wild & amazing boys. I'm a self-proclaimed birth junkie! ha! I love all things pregnancy & birth related, and yes...that includes placentas!! I even have a pair of placenta earrings...okay, they are aspen leaves but I think they look like placentas!! I am passionate in my ability to encourage, educate and empower women and their partners throughout pregnancy. It is extremely important to me for women to have the tools they need to make informed choices when it comes to their body and for she and her partner for their baby. The only way that can happen is through education. Because of this, I've dedicated my life to helping families make their birthing experience everything they wish it to be.
" To know the way ahead, ask those coming back." - Chinese Proverb
In the beginning of 2007, I found out we were expecting. I knew I wanted a natural birth from the moment we conceived. We signed up for childbirth education classes at a local hospital. The instructor taught us all about IV pain meds, epidurals and c-sections but nothing of how to birth my baby naturally. At my baby shower I was speaking with my aunt about my wishes for an unmedicated, natural birth and she said to me, "You are crazy! It is so painful! You have to get the epidural! Why on earth would you not take advantage of modern medicine?". I simply smiled at her and said, "It is not painful, it is childbirth and I want to do it naturally without drugs the way women have been doing it for thousands of years." I was induced on November 12, 2007, my "due date". The doctors said it was necessary because my blood pressure was high. I wasn't worried, I was excited that we were going to be meeting our baby soon. My body did not respond well to the Pitocin. The contractions were so hard, so long and so close together that the baby was not handling it either and we got a front row seat on the roller-coaster to interventions. The natural, unmedicated birth I wanted was out the window. This birth was much more difficult emotionally than it was physically. I had been railroaded into something I didn't want and I vowed to myself I would never let that happen again.
In 2010, I took my first step into the world of birth professionals and became a Doula. Shortly after that I was accepted to Midwifery school. I felt like my dream of making a change in the way women birth their babies was becoming a reality. Shortly after I started midwifery school I had the opportunity to observe a HypnoBirthing class. It was SO different than the childbirth preparation class I had taken at the hospital. This class teaches us that birth is a natural and normal process, that our bodies are perfectly designed to birth our babies. It teaches us how birth works and gives us the tools and confidence we need to do it naturally. By the end of the series I thought, "This is it, this is what I was missing in my first birth, this is what I needed. Every woman needs to know about this!" so I became a HypnoBirthing instructor!
In the fall of 2011, we welcomed our first HypnoBirthing baby. I had special circumstances with this birth that led to another Pitocin induction. My circumstances were much more serious and difficult this time around but this birth was so different, I ROCKED this birth!!!! I had come so far since the birth of my first son. I educated myself on informed decision making. I had the most amazing OB in town, an OB who appreciates and respects a woman's right to a natural childbirth. I understood how my body and baby worked together during labor. HypnoBirthing gave me the tools and the strength to manage whatever turn my birthing took. In this case, it was a really bumpy road with Pitocin contractions and gnarly side effects from the magnesium sulfate BUT I STILL ROCKED A NATURAL BIRTH, no IV drugs, no epidural!!! All the preparation and conditioning I did for my mind and body allowed me the unmedicated birth I wanted, and I attribute my amazing birth to HypnoBirthing.
I have no other way to describe my feelings and abilities to educate, encourage and empower women (and their partners) throughout their pregnancy, labor and birth than pure passion. I can't wait to share the HypnoBirthing philosophy with you and help you make your birthing experience everything you wish it to be.
